Which of the following is equivalent to the statement |a+4|>5?
(A) a>1
(B) -9<a<1
(C) a>1 \ or\ a<-9
(D) a>9

This absolute value inequality can be solved as follows
|a+4|>5
a+4>5 \ or\ a+4<-5
a>1 \ or\ a<-9
Therefore the correct answer is (C).
