In order to solve the following surd equation

\sqrt{a}-4=5

you have first write the equation with only the square root on the left hand side

\sqrt{a}=9

and then square both sides of the equation

(\sqrt{a})^2=9^2

a=81

another SAT quick way is to check the given possible answers by substituting them back into the original equation!!:o:o
