Pythagorean theorem—or Pythagoras' theorem states :

"In any right-angled triangle, the square of the length of the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle) is equal to the sum of the squares of the lengths of the other two sides(the two sides that meet at a right angle).

The theorem can be written as an equation relating the lengths of the sides a, b and c, as follows:

a^2 + b^2 = c^2

where c represents the length of the hypotenuse, and a and b represent the lengths of the other two sides.

Regarding your question about the length of side AC, you have to apply Pythagoras' theorem

AB^2 + BC^2 = AC^2 \Rightarrow AC^2=4^2 + 2^2=16+4=20 \Rightarrow AC=\sqrt{20}=\sqrt{4\cdot5}=2\sqrt{5}.
