You need to apply Pythagoras' theorem to the right angled triangle ΔABD as follows:

AD^2+AB^2=BD^2 \Rightarrow BD^2=4^2+4^2=16+16=32 \Rightarrow BD=\sqrt{32}=\sqrt{2\cdot16}=4\sqrt{2} .
